Amberly Gourlay, a distinguished student speaker at the morning event, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and political science, along with minors in theology and public policy. Gourlay, who served as the student body president during her time at Vanguard, reflected on her four years of experiences at the university and her journey as a resident from Alaska and Durban, South Africa.
In her address, Gourlay expressed the bittersweet emotions that accompany graduation. She acknowledged the challenges and changes she faced while transitioning to the U.S. and conveyed her gratitude for the supportive environment provided by Vanguard University. Following graduation, Gourlay plans to pursue graduate studies at Northeastern University on the East Coast.
Additionally, Howard Booker, who graduated with a Master’s in Business Administration in 2008 from Vanguard, delivered the commencement address. Currently serving as the executive director of the In-N-Out Burger Foundation, Booker has a focus on assisting youth in foster care and other difficult situations. His message to the graduates emphasized that while struggles are a part of their stories, they do not define who they are.
