This community effort not only protects the coastline but also supports the local economy by ensuring a clean environment for visitors. Join locals in making a difference and help preserve the natural beauty of Newport’s beaches.

Newport Beach Gets Ready for a Big Cleanup Day!

Are you ready to roll up your sleeves, Newport Beach? September is here, and that means it’s Coastal Cleanup Month in sunny California! One of the most exciting days is fast approaching on Saturday, September 20, 2025, when communities across the state, including our beloved Newport Beach, will come together for a statewide beach cleanup extravaganza!

What’s Happening?

From 9 a.m. to noon, more than a thousand dedicated volunteers are expected to hit the shores across Orange County to help make our beaches cleaner and more beautiful. Picture this: as you stroll along the beach, you’ll see volunteers with beach towels, surfboards, and lawn chairs eagerly collecting any trash left behind. It’s a lively scene where fun meets responsibility!

Cleanup activities will mainly focus on the lovely Upper Newport Bay and several other picturesque sites around the area. Volunteers will meet at various mini-cleanup locations along the 11-mile loop of the bay, making it easy for everyone to get involved. Specific meeting locations will be provided ahead of time, so there’s no need to worry about where to go!

Get Involved!

So, how can you join the fun? If you’re a local resident looking to make a difference, signing up for the event online is simple! Just be sure to wear some old clothes and closed-toe shoes to stay comfy while you work. It’s always a great idea to bring your own refillable water bottle, a pair of gloves, and either garbage bags or buckets for collecting trash. Every bit of effort matters!

A Community Effort

Why is this beach cleanup so important, you ask? Well, it’s all about protecting our beautiful coastline! Clean beaches support Orange County’s ocean economy, which makes up about one-third of our tourism earnings. When we keep our beaches in tip-top shape, we ensure that visitors continue to flock to the area, enjoying everything our stunning coastline offers.

The Surfrider Foundation, a marquee environmental organization concerned with keeping our oceans healthy, will be on hand to assist and motivate volunteers. They have lots of experience with these kinds of activities, having worked on local beach protection since 1996 and actively addressing issues like plastic pollution and beach accessibility.

Previous Cleanup Successes

Last year, Newport Beach was part of a massive effort, with 4,150 volunteers collecting a whopping 18,987 pounds of trash across Orange County! Can you believe that? Some of the more unusual items that turned up included a mattress, a guitar, and even bicycles! It’s always surprising what kind of junk washes up on our shores.

To keep this momentum going, groups like OC Coastkeeper are hosting public beach cleanups each month and keeping the community engaged. It’s a great way to get involved, meet new people, and enjoy some fresh air while contributing to a fantastic cause.

Let’s Make a Difference Together!

So, mark your calendars and rally your friends and family to join it! Newport Beach’s Coastal Cleanup Day on September 20 will not only beautify our beloved sand and surf but will also strengthen our community spirit. Together, we can help ensure that our beautiful beaches remain clean and vibrant for generations to come! Let’s get ready to make a splash, Newport Beach!
