Costa Mesa, CA – Vanguard University’s Theatre Arts Department is set to dazzle audiences with its production of the musical “Footloose,” opening on February 20 and running through March 9 at the Lyceum Theater. This beloved musical, originally based on the iconic film featuring Kevin Bacon, is known for its energetic storyline and catchy musical numbers, making it suitable for teens and older audiences alike.

The show is an adaptation of a book written by Dean Pitchford, with music also composed by Tom Snow, and has been specifically adapted for the stage by Pitchford in collaboration with Walter Bobbie. It tells the story of Ren McCormack, a teenage boy who relocates from Chicago to the small town of Bomont with his mother after being abandoned by his father. Upon arriving, Ren finds himself at odds with the town’s strict reverend, who has enforced a ban on dancing in the wake of a local tragedy. Ren’s mission to bring the joy of dance back to the town serves as a vehicle for healing and self-expression.

The production is directed and choreographed by Nikki Snelson, a Broadway veteran with over 20 years of experience as a director, choreographer, and actress. Known for her role as Brooke Wyndam in “Legally Blonde,” Snelson brings a wealth of experience to the project, having directed and choreographed various prestigious productions and international performances, including a recent film titled “Ready, Set, GO.” She expressed her enthusiasm about the opportunity to present “Footloose” at Vanguard, highlighting her fondness for the film and her excitement about the talented cast.

Among the cast are a variety of actors who bring life to the characters in this energetic musical. Some notable cast members include Leilua Kruse, Leilani Munck, Alex Norman, and Arabella Chrastina, alongside Matthew Barge, Kendra Barnhart, and Hannah Udvarhelyi. The ensemble is supported by an impressive band featuring musicians such as Scott Cokely (Music Director and Piano), Natalie Suvarnasuddhi (Swing Reed), and Richard Guzman (Guitar), ensuring a high-quality musical experience.

The production team also includes talented designers and crew members who contribute to bringing this vibrant story to life. Jim Huffman serves as the Scenic Designer, while Lia Hansen takes charge as the Costume Designer. Garrett Spady is responsible for the Lighting Design, providing the visual atmosphere for the performance, with Nathan Gall assisting in the lighting department. The crew is rounded out by Jim Huffman as Technical Director, Montana Leyva as Stage Manager, and Alyssa Kammerer as Production Manager, among others.

“Footloose” is expected to resonate with audiences, combining a compelling narrative with lively music and choreography. The production reflects themes of freedom, self-discovery, and the power of community, all while delivering an entertaining and fun theatrical experience. As the performance dates approach, anticipation continues to build for what promises to be an electrifying event at the Lyceum Theater.
