Congressional representatives detailed their requests, highlighting the importance of these funds for the county’s development and safety initiatives.

Orange County Congressional Delegation Seeks Over $190 Million for Local Improvements

In a bid to boost public safety and improve local infrastructure, Orange County’s congressional delegation is all set to request over $190 million in federal funding for the year 2026. This funding will be dedicated to various projects aimed at enhancing roads, parks, fire stations, and more.

An Annual Tradition

This push for federal funds is part of an annual tradition where officials in Congress reach out for financial support to address the needs of local communities. From cities to government agencies, and even nonprofits, many are coming together to express their needs for improvements and enhancements throughout the county. This year’s requests promise to make a big difference in many residents’ daily lives.

Breaking Down the Requests

Leading the charge is Representative Lou Correa with a hefty request of over $46 million, which is the highest among his peers in Orange County. Among his notable initiatives is a $7.5 million proposal to construct an adaptive playground in Fullerton, bringing much-needed recreational space for children of all abilities.

On the other end, Representative Linda Sánchez solicited the least, just under $6.5 million. Her proposed projects include a scenic river walk alongside the Santa Ana River and a Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship situated in Irvine, aimed at promoting local businesses.

It doesn’t stop there. The delegation has earmarked $62.8 million specifically for infrastructure enhancements, which includes the much-needed upgrades to highways and bridges. A glimpse into the requests reveals Representative Young Kim, asking for just under $10 million to add new lanes on major roads, including enhancements on the busy 5 Freeway.

Meanwhile, Representative Mike Levin is seeking $2.5 million to realign and widen the La Novia Avenue bridge in San Juan Capistrano. Improving transportation is crucial, and the funds will ensure safer travels for everyone in the area.

Strengthening Public Safety

A significant portion of the funding is dedicated to enhancing public safety, with a total of $34.5 million requested for various community protection initiatives. This includes the establishment of real-time crime centers in Anaheim, Costa Mesa, and Orange, which are essential in keeping the neighborhoods safer.

Representative Derek Tran is focusing on public safety as well, with requests for new facilities like an emergency operations center in Los Alamitos and a public safety office in La Palma. It is evident that ensuring the safety of residents is a top priority for the congressional delegation.

Revamping Recreational Spaces

In an effort to improve recreational spaces, the delegation has requested $14 million for upgrades to facilities that cater to the community—think parks, trails, libraries, and senior centers. Levin is pushing for the improvement of the Mariposa Walkway and Trail in San Clemente with a request of $10 million to enhance this beloved outdoor space.

Supporting Our Firefighters

A noteworthy request of $21 million is being aimed at constructing and renovating fire stations across Orange County, ensuring that our brave firefighters have the updated facilities they need. This includes $2 million for the South Laguna Beach station and a solid $5 million earmarked for a new station in Fountain Valley.

Addressing Water Quality and Housing Needs

On a broader note, $14 million is set aside for water quality projects, notably $10 million for PFAS treatment plants, an urgent necessity for residents concerned about clean drinking water. In terms of housing, Min is requesting $1.5 million for a navigation center in Huntington Beach, and Tran has put in a request for $2 million to support affordable housing developments through the Orange County Housing Finance Trust.

As Congress is currently in recess, it’s essential for budget approvals to be completed by October 1. With so much at stake, we can only hope that these requests receive the green light to enhance the well-being and safety of Orange County’s residents.
