Costa Mesa – Vanguard University has officially been granted full NCAA Division II membership, effective for the 2025-26 academic year. The move marks a significant transition for the university, which has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) since 1986. This advancement aligns Vanguard’s athletic programs with those of other universities at the Division II level, substantially enhancing their competitiveness within the PacWest Conference.

Previously, Vanguard University received provisional approval for NCAA Division II status two years ago and has now completed its transition earlier than expected. The university’s final year of a three-year transition was waived due to its successful compliance with all NCAA benchmarks—academic, operational, and compliance—achieved one year ahead of schedule. This early completion highlights Vanguard’s readiness to take on the challenges of a higher competitive level.

Last academic year, Vanguard teams competed under an NCAA Division II schedule while on probation and were not eligible for postseason play. However, had they been eligible, both the men’s soccer team and women’s basketball team would have qualified for the Division II playoffs. The women’s basketball team, in their inaugural Division II season, finished with an impressive overall record of 18-8, securing second place in the Pacific West Conference with a conference record of 16-4.

The transition to NCAA Division II is pivotal for Vanguard and its athletic director, who expressed enthusiasm regarding the significant implications this change holds amid the evolving landscape of small college athletics on the West Coast. The university’s athletic offerings will now encompass sports such as baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, track and field, and women’s volleyball. Additionally, men’s volleyball and wrestling will compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while STUNT, women’s beach volleyball, and dance will engage in competitions outside the NCAA framework.

To support its transition, Vanguard has invested in state-of-the-art facilities, notably the newly opened 61,000-square foot Freed Center for Leadership and Service. This center is designed to support athletic development and includes dedicated spaces for training, such as a training room equipped with hydrotherapy tubs and advanced kinesiology labs aimed at enhancing student-athlete performance and education. The improvements to facilities have resulted in a significant boost in morale, with student-athletes expressing excitement about the upgraded training equipment and dedicated locker rooms enhanced for video analysis.

Vanguard’s commitment to elevating the student-athlete experience is underscored by a recent doubling of ticket sales, attributed to their provisional move to NCAA Division II. Senior members of the women’s volleyball team have noted the heightened pace of competition in Division II but are optimistic about the increased opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

The transition to NCAA Division II represents a new chapter for Vanguard University, allowing the institution to establish a fresh legacy within the NCAA following a long history with the NAIA. As athletic programs continue to adapt and enhance their competitive edge, Vanguard looks forward to establishing itself firmly within the NCAA framework and contributing to the collegiate athletic community.
