Atascadero Community Mourns the Loss of Patrick Scott Heckman

Atascadero, California — Patrick Scott Heckman, a beloved father and active community member, passed away on July 11, 2025, at the age of 55 after a prolonged battle with stage 4 cancer. His dedication to family and community left an indelible mark on those who knew him.

Born on June 10, 1970, in Bellflower, California, Heckman grew up in the Fountain Valley and Long Beach areas, where he created cherished memories with his family, often going biking, swimming, and surfing at nearby Huntington Beach. Following the relocation of his family to the Central Coast, he developed a deep love for the ocean and baseball, which became integral parts of his life.

Heckman’s connection to the community began early when he delivered newspapers in Shell Beach, fostering friendships and affection for the surrounding areas. He graduated from Atascadero High School after moving to Atascadero during his freshman year. Patrick later met his wife, Suzie Larsen, through mutual friends a year after his graduation, and the couple married in 1996. They celebrated their 29th anniversary just days before his passing.

The couple built their family in Morro Bay, surrounded by their grandparents, and welcomed five children: Thomas Patrick (1998), Emily Lauren (2002), Luke Samuel (2004), Holly Maureen (2006), and Autumn Suzanne (2010). Patrick was a dedicated father who took pride in his role, often humorously noting that he was simply “bringing good people into the world.”

Active in local sports, Heckman contributed his time and efforts to organizations such as Atascadero Little League, youth and adult roller hockey, and AYSO soccer. His commitment extended further into community service roles with the Boy Scouts of America and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a regular participant at church services in Santa Margarita de Cortona, where he shared his love for reading aloud.

Professional Life and Contributions

Heckman had a distinguished career in steel detailing, starting out as an employee before becoming the owner of Rockview Drafting in 2000. Transitioning to full-time self-employment in 2004, he earned a reputation as an expert in structural steel detailing, working diligently to support his family, which allowed Suzie to remain a stay-at-home mom for 15 years.

Health Struggles and Legacy

Despite his successful career and vibrant family life, Heckman’s life took a challenging turn when he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. After undergoing aggressive treatment for 18 months, he succumbed to the illness, leaving behind a profound legacy. He is predeceased by his mother Cherri, Uncle Dennis, and his grandparents Vic and Cheridah Heckman. He is survived by his father Gary Brodie, uncles Mickey and Paul, aunts Maureen and Annette, along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, his wife Suzanne, and his five children.

Community Reflection

Patrick Scott Heckman’s commitment to his family and his contributions to the Atascadero community will not be forgotten. His legacy lives on through the memories, humor, and values that he instilled in his five children. As the community grieves his loss, many will remember his unwavering dedication to making the world a better place, one day at a time.
