News Summary

Vanguard University has named its business school the Patty Arvielo School of Business and Management, honoring the contributions of Latina entrepreneur Patty Arvielo. This initiative is supported by a significant donation from the Arvielo family, aimed at enhancing educational opportunities for Latino students. With the school set to commence operations in the upcoming academic year, it will provide a variety of programs and initiatives focused on leadership development, inclusivity, and diversity in business education.

Costa Mesa, CA – Vanguard University (VU) has officially named its business school the Patty Arvielo School of Business and Management, making it the first business school in the United States to carry the name of a Latina. This significant announcement was made during a surprise unveiling ceremony on April 19, 2023, which drew nearly 800 attendees, including students, faculty, staff, and supporters. The event also featured Patty Arvielo, a prominent entrepreneur and co-founder of New American Funding, the largest Latina-owned private mortgage company in the country.

The establishment of the Patty Arvielo School is backed by a substantial donation from the Arvielo family, which is noted as the largest in Vanguard University’s 103-year history. This donation is intended to support endowed scholarships, new faculty appointments, and the creation of a Master of Business Administration (MBA) program. With this initiative, Vanguard aims to enhance educational opportunities, particularly for Latino students, of whom around 47% of its undergraduate population identify as such.

VU President Michael Beals emphasized the significance of Arvielo’s journey as a powerful example for Hispanic, female, and all students, highlighting her substantial contributions to the community. The Patty Arvielo School of Business and Management is set to officially commence operations during the 2024-2025 academic year, with plans to cater to diverse student populations that include undergraduate, graduate, distance education, and non-traditional students.

Programs Offered

The new business school will feature an array of programs encompassing accounting, business administration, management, marketing, communication, organizational psychology, and people operations. Currently, the business program at VU is the university’s largest enrolled academic sector and is commemorating its 50th anniversary this year.

Leadership Development Initiatives

In line with its commitment to enhance leadership opportunities, Vanguard University has established the Jesse Miranda Center for Hispanic Leadership, directed by Celina Canales. This initiative seeks to advance leadership roles for Latino students at the university. Recently, a course titled Leadership and Latina/o Identity was completed by 37 first-year and transfer Latino students, focusing on themes of cultural identity, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and developing leadership capabilities.

Future Plans for the Business School

Moving forward, Vanguard University intends to appoint a transitional dean and begin a national search for the school’s founding dean by Fall 2024. The vision is to build a mission-driven, market-focused business school that cultivates ethical and character-rich business leaders.

Significance for Hispanic Representation

The creation of the Patty Arvielo School of Business and Management marks a historic milestone for Hispanic women on a national level. Arvielo’s story is a testament to overcoming challenges such as impostor syndrome and highlights the importance of representation within business leadership for Latina individuals. As Vanguard strives for inclusivity and diversity, the establishment of this school reflects its dedication to empowering Latino students on their professional journeys.

Through the launch of the Patty Arvielo School, Vanguard University reinforces its commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment, providing resources, and opening doors for future leaders. As the academic year approaches, anticipation grows surrounding the impact this landmark school will have on its students and the wider community.
