Costa Mesa, California – Vanguard University’s Theatre Arts Department is set to present the musical ‘Footloose’, opening on February 20 and running through March 9. This popular production, which has been adapted from the iconic 1984 film featuring Kevin Bacon, will be directed and choreographed by Broadway veteran Nikki Snelson.

The musical tells the story of Ren McCormack, a teenage boy from Chicago who moves to the small town of Bomont, where dancing has been outlawed. Ren, determined to change the town’s restrictive traditions, joins forces with Ariel, the Reverend’s daughter, and Willard, his new friend. Together, they aim to bring joy and self-expression back to their lives amidst the harsh rules imposed by the local authorities.

Vanguard’s rendition of ‘Footloose’ features a talented cast that includes Leilua Kruse, Leilani Munck, Alex Norman, Arabella Chrastina, Matthew Barge, Kendra Barnhart, Hannah Udvarhelyi, Julia Flores, Dane Hobrecht, Faith Horne, Dylan Cranford, Natalia Elizalde, Nathan Gall, Noah Osborne, Isaac Yescas, Ezekial Fuller, Nadia McGill, Neveah Snow, Michael Oliva-Hernandez, Rylee Schmidt, Giana Garcia, Jordan Silva, Ruth Gray, and Christina Rose. The production aims to capture the essence of the original film while showcasing a unique interpretation through vibrant music and choreography.

The band accompanying the production features Scott Cokely as Music Director and Piano, with additional musicians including Natalie Suvarnasuddhi on Swing Reed, Eby Viveros on Bass, David Page on Drums, Richard Guzman on Guitar, and Kelly Cokely on Piano 2. Together, they will bring the beloved soundtrack to life, featuring popular songs such as “Holding Out for a Hero” and “Let’s Hear It for the Boy.”

The production team is composed of experienced professionals, with Jim Huffman serving as the Scenic Designer, Lia Hansen as the Costume Designer, and Garrett Spady as the Lighting Designer. The technical crew includes Jim Huffman as the Technical Director, Montana Leyva as Stage Manager, and Alyssa Kammerer as Production Manager, ensuring that every element of the performance is executed seamlessly.

Nikki Snelson, known for her role as Brooke Wyndam in ‘Legally Blonde’, brings a wealth of experience to the stage. With a career that spans Broadway and national tours, Snelson’s recent projects include directing and choreographing a production of ‘Chicago’ in Singapore. She is currently based in Orange County, California, and has developed an original film titled ‘Ready, Set, GO’ for Vanguard.

‘Footloose’ is deemed appropriate for teens and older audiences, offering a thrilling and emotional experience. The show will be staged at the Lyceum Theater at Vanguard University, promising to be a captivating event that embodies the spirit of freedom and self-expression through music and dance.
