The commencement took place on Thursday, with graduates from various programs honored throughout the day. The morning ceremony recognized 361 members of the Class of 2025, while the afternoon saw the graduation of 53 professional education undergraduates and an additional 100 graduate students. University President Michael Beals had the honor of handing out diplomas to the graduating class.
Among the standout speakers at the ceremonies was Amberly Gourlay, the student body president, who addressed attendees during the morning session. Gourlay, who obtained a bachelor of arts degree in history and political science and minored in theology and public policy, shared her unique journey. Originally from Alaska and raised in Durban, South Africa, she has been a resident of Southern California for the past four years. Gourlay has also been actively involved in campus life, participating in the College Corps program and serving as a resident assistant in Newport Hall.
Her plans following graduation include pursuing further studies at Northeastern University on the East Coast, where she aims to expand her academic qualifications and career prospects.
In the afternoon ceremony, the keynote address was delivered by Howard Booker, a notable alumnus of Vanguard University who received a master’s in business administration in 2008. As the executive director of the In-N-Out Burger Foundation, Booker has dedicated significant time to supporting youth in foster care, utilizing his platform to make a positive impact in the community.
Booker inspired graduates through stories that highlighted the themes of resilience and overcoming adversity, urging them to recognize that their past experiences do not define their futures. His address emphasized the importance of moving forward despite challenges, resonating with many graduates embarking on new phases of life.
