A stunning showcase of culinary talent at the James Beard Awards.
Two innovative chefs from Orange County, Daniel Castillo of Heritage Barbecue and Strong Water, were nominated for the prestigious James Beard Awards but unfortunately left empty-handed. The awards ceremony celebrated culinary excellence across the nation, with Los Angeles chef Jon Yao winning Best Chef: California. Despite not winning, the recognition showcases the growing culinary talent in Orange County, highlighting the chefs’ dedication and contributions to the foodie scene.
Chicago was the center of culinary excitement on June 16 as the 2025 James Beard Awards unfolded, shining a spotlight on exceptional culinary talents from across the nation. Among the stars of the night were two talented chefs from Orange County, Daniel Castillo of Heritage Barbecue and Strong Water from Anaheim, both hoping to bring home prestigious awards for their remarkable contributions to the foodie scene.
Daniel Castillo was in the running for the coveted Best Chef: California category, bringing with him the innovative spirit of Heritage Barbecue, which has garnered a loyal following. Meanwhile, Strong Water was nominated for Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program, showcasing its unique offerings and vibrant atmosphere. Unfortunately, both nominees had to head back home empty-handed, as they didn’t snag any awards this year.
The awards ceremony saw the James Beard Foundation honoring over 100 restaurants and food makers as finalists across 25 categories. Each winner received a beautifully crafted certificate alongside a medallion that features the likeness of James Beard, a celebrated American chef known for his influence on the culinary arts.
This year, the coveted title of Best Chef: California went to Jon Yao of Kato in Los Angeles. Interestingly, this marks the third consecutive win for a Los Angeles chef in this category. Other talented chefs vying for the title included Tara Monsod of Animae in San Diego, Richard Lee of Saison in San Francisco, and Kosuke Tada of Mijoté, also from San Francisco. In his acceptance speech, Yao paid tribute to the rich stories of immigrants, emphasizing unity and the necessity of voicing support for immigrant communities.
Although Castillo and Strong Water didn’t clinch any awards this year, it’s worth noting that Strong Water had experienced a similar situation in 2024, as they lost to a fellow contestant from Baltimore. Another familiar name from Orange County, R.J. Yoakum, an executive chef from Georgie in Dallas and a Mission Viejo native, was a finalist in the Emerging Chef category, which was ultimately won by Phila Lorn of Mawn from Philadelphia. These achievements paint a picture of the expanding reach of culinary talent emerging from the Orange County area and beyond.
The winners of the 2025 awards were assessed based on various criteria, including their culinary skills, behavioral ethics, and how they treat their employees. The James Beard Foundation has celebrated culinary excellence since 1991, with only a few interruptions during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19.
While the night may not have ended with awards for Orange County’s talented chefs, the recognition alone speaks volumes about their dedication and talent. Remaining steadfast in their culinary journey, these chefs continue to redefine flavors and elevate the dining experience.
We look forward to seeing what the future holds for Orange County’s culinary scene, as these passionate chefs continue to craft unforgettable dishes and contribute to a vibrant community that celebrates food and culture.
