Costa Mesa, California – Vanguard University’s Theatre Arts Department is set to present the musical “Footloose”, opening on February 20, 2025, and running through March 9, 2025. The show will be directed and choreographed by Broadway veteran Nikki Snelson, recognized for her extensive experience in theater that spans over 20 years.

Originally written by Dean Pitchford and adapted by Pitchford and Walter Bobbie, “Footloose” can be characterized as an energetic and heartfelt musical that tells the story of Ren McCormack, a teenager from Chicago. After moving to the small town of Bomont, Ren confronts the town’s ban on dancing and fights for the rights of his peers to express themselves through music and dance. The production features memorable songs, including “Holding Out for a Hero” and “Let’s Hear It for the Boy”.

The talented cast includes Leilua Kruse, Leilani Munck, Alex Norman, Arabella Chrastina, Matthew Barge, and Kendra Barnhart, among others. In support of the performers, a skilled band will be providing live music, consisting of Scott Cokely on piano, Natalie Suvarnasuddhi on reed instruments, Eby Viveros on bass, and Richard Guzman on guitar.

Leading the creative team, Snelson brings a wealth of experience from her acclaimed career on Broadway. She is particularly known for her role as Brooke Wyndam in both the original cast and the MTV cast of “Legally Blonde”. Snelson also originated the role of Winnie Tate in the Broadway revival of “Annie Get Your Gun” featuring Bernadette Peters. Additionally, she has choreographed productions such as “Chicago” at Maine State Theater and “Cabaret” at The Napa Valley Opera House.

The design team for “Footloose” includes scenic designer Jim Huffman, costume designer Lia Hansen, and lighting designer Garrett Spady, working collaboratively to enhance the visual storytelling of the musical. The show is tailored to be suitable for teenagers and older audiences, appealing to a broad range of viewers.

Nikki Snelson’s role extends beyond directing this production; she currently serves as the Artistic Director for Rochester Broadway Theater League’s Summer Stars program. Her international profile is further highlighted by her teaching and choreography work in over ten countries, including Argentina, Singapore, and Ireland. Snelson is also the CEO of Musical Theatre Mayhem, which facilitates workshops with various Broadway stars.

As Vanguard University’s Theatre Arts Department prepares to launch this exciting production, audiences can look forward to an exhilarating experience characterized by dynamic choreography and compelling storytelling. “Footloose” promises to capture the spirit of teenage rebellion through music and dance, ensuring a memorable performance for all.
