Irvine, CA – Vanguard University held its commencement ceremony on Thursday at Mariners Church, celebrating 514 graduates. The event marked the beginning of the graduation season in May, making Vanguard University the first local institution to honor its students.
The ceremony consisted of two parts. In the morning, 361 members of the Class of 2025 participated and received their diplomas from university President Michael Beals. In the afternoon event, an additional 53 professional education undergraduates and 100 graduate students received their degrees, culminating in a total of 514 graduates.
Amberly Gourlay, a prominent graduate, served as the student speaker during the morning ceremony. Gourlay received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and political science, along with minors in theology and public policy. She played an active role on campus, serving as the student body president and engaging in various leadership positions, including her contributions as a College Corps resident and a resident assistant in Newport Hall.
Gourlay’s personal background adds a poignant note to her journey. Originally from Alaska and raised in Durban, South Africa, Gourlay communicated her mixed emotions about graduating from a place she described as a “safe space” while she adjusted to life in the United States. Following her graduation, she plans to further her education by attending graduate school at Northeastern University on the East Coast.
The commencement ceremony also featured Howard Booker, an alumnus who earned his MBA at Vanguard in 2008. He delivered the keynote address to the graduates. As the executive director of the In-N-Out Burger Foundation, Booker specializes in working with youth in foster care and often addresses pressing issues like homelessness.
In his speech, Booker motivated the graduates, particularly those who have faced significant challenges in their lives. He emphasized the importance of recognizing that hardships are part of a larger narrative but do not define an individual.
This year’s commencement for Vanguard University kicks off the graduation season in Irvine, with various local schools set to hold their ceremonies in the coming weeks. Vanguard University, a four-year liberal arts institution, has been a staple in the community, providing quality education and empowering students to pursue their academic and professional goals.
The Class of 2025 reflects the university’s commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment, equipping graduates with valuable skills and knowledge to thrive in their respective fields. As they embark on the next chapter of their lives, the combined total of 514 graduates represents a significant milestone for the university and its ongoing legacy.
