The vibrant community of Huntington Beach, California.
Jennifer Carey has announced her resignation as Deputy City Manager of Huntington Beach to take on the role of Chief of Staff for Senator Tony Strickland. Having joined the city in 2021, Carey progressed through various positions, building a strong relationship with Strickland. While Carey is moving on, she will continue to support the Huntington Beach community in her new role, and the city is actively seeking a replacement for her position as Deputy City Manager.
Jennifer Carey has announced her resignation from her role as Deputy City Manager of Huntington Beach to accept a new position as Chief of Staff for Senator Tony Strickland, who represents District 36. Carey’s final day in her current position will be Tuesday, with her new role set to begin a week later.
Carey joined the city in 2021 as the Public Information Officer for the Police Department, where she quickly gained recognition for her capabilities. Promoted to Public Affairs Manager in January 2022, she further advanced her career by serving as Acting Deputy Manager for six months before being officially appointed as Deputy City Manager in January 2023.
During her time in Huntington Beach, Carey established a close working relationship with Senator Strickland, especially during his tenure as mayor in 2023. Although the two did not know each other prior to his election to the City Council in 2022, their collaboration has proven to be instrumental in the city’s governance.
Carey holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in communication, both obtained from Arizona State University. Her educational background and career trajectory highlight her dedication to public service and effective communication strategies.
As Chief of Staff, Carey will be based at Senator Strickland’s district office in Huntington Beach. She has described her decision to leave her current position as difficult, but ultimately feels it is the right choice for her career path and to serve the community from a different capacity.
Senator Strickland has expressed confidence in Carey’s abilities, praising her talent and work ethic while anticipating her contributions to the 36th District. His move to the state senate comes after resigning from the City Council, following a special election where he secured more than 50% of the primary vote.
As Carey prepares to move on, Huntington Beach is actively working on onboarding a new city spokesperson to fill her position. Despite her resignation, Carey has emphasized that she is not entirely leaving Huntington Beach but will continue to support the community from her new role within the Senate office.
This transition marks a significant milestone in Carey’s career trajectory, as it reflects growth and new opportunities in government service. The city will keenly observe how this shift will influence its public affairs under new leadership while ensuring continued representation and support for its residents.
