Community members come together for political discussions in Orange County.
Frank Gomez is returning to Orange County politics after a decade-long hiatus. Taking a break to focus on family, he’s now leading STEM initiatives at California State University and rejuvenating the Central Orange County Democratic Club. After a series of political challenges, Gomez is determined to increase Democratic representation in this predominantly Republican area, fostering engagement and education within the community.
In the bustling city of Orange County, it appears that politics is getting a refreshing boost from none other than Frank Gomez. After taking a lengthy, nearly decade-long break from the political spotlight to enjoy life and prioritize family, Gomez is back and ready to shake things up. Born into a politically impactful family in Los Angeles County, he doesn’t just bring a name to the table – he brings a wealth of experience!
From a young age, Gomez was surrounded by politics. With a grandfather who attended Roosevelt High alongside prominent congressmember Ed Roybal, and parents who mingled with influential political figures in the heart of Los Angeles, it wasn’t surprising when he was elected to the Montebello Unified School District board of trustees in 1997. It was just the beginning of his political journey, and with the support of notable figures like Richard Polanco, Gomez was on his way to making waves.
Fast forward to 2013, and Frank made a bold decision to step away from the political scene, choosing to marry his current wife. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing love over politics. But after years away, Gomez is back on the political map, now leading STEM initiatives for the California State University system. This role has allowed him to leverage his background as a chemistry professor to make a lasting impact on education and engagement in the community.
He recently took the reins as the chair of the Central Orange County Democratic Club, and under his leadership, the club has seen exponential growth, skyrocketing from just 60 members to over 300! Talk about a political comeback! Gomez sees this as an opportunity to expand the influence of the Democratic Party in Orange County—regions that are often seen as entirely separate from L.A. politics.
The dynamics of Orange County politics are certainly different from what Gomez experienced in Los Angeles. While many political battles in L.A. are among Democrats, Orange County features a unique landscape where issues and challenges diverge significantly. Understanding the need for a strategic approach, Gomez is applying his skills and background to foster Democratic growth in the region.
In 2022, Gomez ignited conversations when his stepson encouraged him to run for the Tustin City Council. While the campaign faced its fair share of criticisms—some opponents insinuated he’d bring L.A. problems to Tustin—Gomez displayed resilience. He previously navigated a tricky political route when he attempted an unsuccessful run for the Municipal Water District of Orange County. However, that hasn’t dampened his spirit; Gomez now has his sights set on challenging Rep. Young Kim, showcasing his commitment to Democratic representation in this Republican stronghold.
One of Gomez’s favorite initiatives is hosting political salons during the monthly meetings of the Central O.C. Democrats. These gatherings are anything but ordinary; they include engaging discussions with local political figures, providing a platform for ideas and inquiries. He likens his participation to being a classroom instructor, guiding conversations and helping develop knowledge within the political community.
Upcoming events promise to be equally exciting, featuring guests ranging from candidates for local supervisorial positions to gubernatorial hopefuls. Frank has humorously described his role in these discussions as akin to “Johnny Carson on intellectual steroids.” It’s evident that he doesn’t take himself too seriously, fostering an inviting atmosphere for attendees to learn and engage in political dialogue.
As Frank Gomez embraces his re-emergence in Orange County politics, one can’t help but feel a sense of excitement for what the future holds. With a charismatic approach and solid foundational knowledge, he’s not just another politician but rather a familiar name poised to make a formidable impact. Regardless of how competitors choose to respond, Gomez is committed to building a vibrant community and nurturing the Democratic potential in Orange County.
