The event highlighted the camaraderie and spirit of high school sports.

Santa Margarita’s Teagan O’Dell Shatters Records at CIF-SS Division 1 Swimming Championships

Santa Margarita, California, was the talk of the town as the CIF-SS Division 1 swimming championships took center stage at Mt. SAC, where temperatures soared close to a sizzling 100 degrees. It was an exciting day for fans, swimmers, and, most importantly, the record books! Teagan O’Dell, a standout athlete from Santa Margarita, took the spotlight, smashing not one, but two county records and two Division 1 records.

Thrilling Achievements

O’Dell’s impressive performances were crucial in helping the Santa Margarita girls’ team clinch their record-tying 11th consecutive championship. This notable achievement matched the record set by Mission Viejo’s girls’ teams in the 1970s and 1980s. The Santa Margarita girls accumulated a whopping 418.5 points, showcasing their depth and talent. Meanwhile, the boys’ team continued their winning streak, securing their fifth consecutive title by scoring 321.5 points.

A Day to Remember for O’Dell

Teagan O’Dell truly stole the show. She triumphed in the 200-yard individual medley (IM) with a time of 1 minute, 53.43 seconds, setting a new Division 1 record and coming oh-so-close to her own national high school record, missing it by a mere five one-hundredths of a second. During the race, she split the first 100 yards in 51.36 seconds, which was approximately one second faster than her national record pace!

But O’Dell didn’t stop there! She also led her relays to victories in the 200 and 400 freestyle events, making waves by breaking county records in the 50 freestyle at 22.17 seconds and the 100 freestyle at 48.01 seconds. Additionally, she conquered the 100 backstroke with a stunning Division 1 record time of 51.09 seconds. It was a day filled with exhilaration, achievement, and, yes, a bit of sweat!

Staying Cool Under Pressure

Despite the scorching temperatures, O’Dell mentioned enjoying racing in the heat, as it keeps her body loose! However, she emphasized the importance of staying hydrated, especially during such high-stakes events. It’s a reminder for all athletes to prioritize their health!

Shining Stars Across the Championships

The excitement wasn’t just centered on O’Dell. Northwood’s Derek Hitchens also made headlines by claiming his first section titles while breaking county records in both the 100 freestyle with a time of 43.79 seconds and the 100 backstroke at 47.19 seconds. His victory in the 100 free notably broke a long-standing record held since 1994 by Olympian Derya Buyukuncu!

Other highlights included Northwood’s Andrew Maksymowski winning the 500 freestyle, posting a county-leading time of 4:23.91 and contributing to a crucial relay victory. The 200 free relay was an intense showdown, where Northwood edged past JSerra by just one-hundredth of a second!

Notable Performances and New Champions

JSerra also celebrated a significant milestone, capturing their first-ever section relay title in boys’ history with a commendable 400 free relay time of 3:00.75. And let’s not forget Fountain Valley’s Alyssa Ton, who excelled on her 16th birthday by winning the 200 at 1:44.12 and the 500 freestyles at 4:43.39.

The competitiveness didn’t stop there! Notable swimmers like Newport Harbor’s Connor Ohl dazzled the crowd with a remarkable 50 free win at 20.04 seconds and Tesoro’s Liam Mulroy made waves by winning the butterfly in 48.43 seconds. Meanwhile, Mater Dei’s Elonzo Santos, a junior, made his mark by winning the breaststroke in 54.09 seconds, which ranks third in county history!

As we reflect on this high-stakes competition, the excitement and camaraderie displayed by all the teams certainly left a lasting impression. The championships offered an unforgettable experience for athletes and spectators alike, proving once again that high school sports have a magical way of bringing people together.
