In a delightful gathering that lit up the evening, Orange Coast College (OCC) opened its doors for an exhilarating open mic night on April 30, 2025. Students filled the OCC Student Union, creating an electric atmosphere filled with enthusiasm, camaraderie, and a lot of talent. The event served as a platform for 11 different acts, showcasing the rich array of artistic skills present within the student body.
As the night kicked off, bystanders were treated to a series of performances that covered a range of musical styles. One standout performance came from Jordan Davis, an economics major at OCC, who took to the stage to perform a gripping cover of “Incinerate” by Sonic Youth. It was evident that this was a piece he holds dear, as he expressed a desire to perfect it after previous renditions at earlier open mic nights. Jordan’s passion was palpable, resonating deeply with many in the audience.
The fun didn’t stop there! A unique highlight came when a group of talented music majors spontaneously joined forces to perform a spirited rendition of “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers. This crew included Jake Pitcher strumming away on his guitar, Phuong Trinh captivating audiences with her flute melodies, Mo Mendoza tickling the ivories on the piano, and James Pham, who not only sang backup but also showcased his impressive beatboxing skills. This impromptu collaboration had the audience clapping along, holding up flashlights, and singing the beloved chorus in unity.
Throughout the evening, the audience was more than just spectators. They were actively engaged, fostering a vibrant communal spirit that filled the air. Cheers, claps, and bursts of laughter permeated the Student Union, creating an atmosphere that made every performer feel supported. This lively interaction highlighted the growth of the campus community, something that OCC prides itself on.
Helping to cultivate this sense of community was Davan Luu, a member of the College Life Committee at OCC, who emphasized the importance of providing an outlet for students to showcase their unique talents. The effort made by all involved truly illustrated the spirit of togetherness that has blossomed on campus throughout the year.
It wasn’t all just about music though! The open mic night was paired with friendly offerings of snacks and drinks, putting the cherry on top of this engaging experience. Attendees could munch and sip while enjoying the fantastic line-up of performances. The scent of popcorn and sweet treats wafted through the air, adding a cozy touch to the whole event.
Adding an extra layer of musical finesse to the night, both Professor April Chocholaty and Phuong Trinh demonstrated their flute-playing skills during various segments of the performances. With talent radiating from both the faculty and students, the open mic night truly showcased the rich musical talent at OCC.
The open mic night was a part of a larger initiative to foster talent and strengthen community bonds among students at Orange Coast College. The event encapsulated the passion and skill of student performers and exemplified how spaces like these allow individuals to shine and connect with peers.
As the night drew to a close, attendees left with smiles, energized spirits, and the eagerness for the next opportunity to cheer on their talented classmates. The buzz in the air suggested that this was just the beginning of many more open mic nights to come, highlighting the amazing talents at OCC that are truly worthy of celebration.
