New York is facing uncertainty regarding its electric vehicle (EV) mandate, which aims to ban the sale of gas-powered vehicles by 2035, following a recent vote by the U.S. House of Representatives. The House voted to block California’s rules requiring all automobiles to be free of fossil fuel emissions by the same deadline, which is significant because New York has adopted regulations mirroring those set by California.
U.S. Representative Nick Langworthy voiced support for the House vote, claiming it reverses the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) decision that favored California’s gas vehicle ban. Langworthy characterized the surge towards electric vehicles as both “nonsensical and dangerous,” expressing concern for the potential negative impacts on New York’s automotive industry, including dealerships and workers. He previously urged Governor Kathy Hochul to reconsider New York’s EV Sales Mandate, cautioning that it could lead to unsold inventory and job losses within the sector.
Langworthy described the House legislation as a significant victory for consumers, dealerships, and automotive workers, calling for the Senate to pass the legislation swiftly for presidential approval.
In a related push to encourage EV purchases, New York announced a $30 million incentive program aimed at boosting electric vehicle sales and leases through rebates. This initiative includes the Drive Clean Rebate program, which offers point-of-sale rebates for over 60 models of new electric vehicles and provides charging incentives for multifamily buildings and workplaces.
Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized New York’s role as a leader in electric vehicle adoption and highlighted efforts to offer budget-friendly options for consumers. She also noted the importance of developing the necessary infrastructure to ensure convenient access to charging stations.
Additionally, the City of Buffalo has announced its commitment to modernizing city operations by purchasing four electric vehicles, including two Chevy Equinox EVs and two Ford F150 Lightning EVs. The total cost for this initiative is $202,974, funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
Further contributing to the electric vehicle landscape, Ymer Technology, a manufacturer of electric vehicle components, has opened its new U.S. headquarters in Buffalo Grove. This initiative comes with a $5.7 million investment bolstered by a state grant. Ymer Technology’s facilities will focus on producing cooling technology and thermal management systems for electric vehicles, thereby enhancing the EV supply chain in Illinois.
Illinois currently hosts over 1,000 companies involved in the electric vehicle supply chain and has allocated more than $45 billion toward infrastructure modernization through 2025. The state has also invested over $180 million since 2021 in renewable energy workforce training under the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act, reinforcing its commitment to a clean energy economy.
The establishment of Ymer Technology’s project is anticipated to create over 30 new jobs, further solidifying Illinois’s position as a leader in the clean energy sector while supporting the overarching goals of electric vehicle adoption and sustainability.
