In the vibrant heart of Orange County, exciting plans are unfolding. Supervisor Katrina Foley’s office has recently been bustling with initiatives centered around transportation safety, beach restoration, and the ongoing revitalization of Dana Point Harbor. With the 2028 Olympics on the horizon, these projects are setting the stage for a brighter, safer community.
First off, strong neighborhoods that prioritize resident safety are at the forefront. The community recently gathered for a meeting with the OC Sheriff’s Department and OC Public Works. Here, residents shared their thoughts and feedback on crucial topics like traffic calming measures, E-bike safety, and plans for road improvements. To facilitate even more resident input, a transportation safety survey has been rolled out, encouraging locals to voice their concerns and suggestions.
In partnership with OCTA and Caltrans, the much-anticipated I-5 Improvements Project has just been unveiled. This project is not only a game-changer for local commuters, but it has also created an impressive 530 construction jobs. The enhancements include upgraded on-ramps and off-ramps, an extension of the second carpool lane, modernized lighting, enhanced seismic safety features, and new bike lanes. The project aims to make it easier for everyone to get around, whether they’re driving, using public transit, walking, or biking.
On another front, the area has been tackling challenges posed by coastal erosion and landslides, which have disrupted rail services multiple times over the last few years. Thankfully, the California Coastal Commission is stepping in. They’ve approved a partial emergency permit to stabilize the rail corridor while planning to add a whopping 540,000 cubic yards of sand to the beaches as a form of mitigation. With rail closures beginning on April 28 for six weeks, Metrolink will continue its limited operations south of Laguna Niguel, and Amtrak is set to provide modified service with bus connections in place.
As the county gears up for the 2028 Olympics, there’s palpable excitement in the air. The events will feature volleyball at the Honda Center and surfing at Trestles, with San Clemente slated as a key location. The initiatives in place are helping to prepare Orange County to shine during this global event, showcasing its talent and spirit.

This includes funds for the historic Laguna Playhouse, one of the West Coast’s oldest not-for-profit theaters, which has entertained audiences since 1920.
