Orange, California: A Musical Celebration Awaits

Get ready, music lovers of Orange County! The talented Chamber Singers from Orange Coast College (OCC) are gearing up for a sensational performance of Mozart’s Requiem on Saturday, May 10. This extraordinary concert will take place in the welcoming atmosphere of the Robert B. Moore Theatre on the OCC campus, and it promises an evening filled with breathtaking music and emotion.

A Brand New Journey

The mastermind behind this uplifting event, Eliza Rubenstein, the choral director at OCC, has a fascinating story. She moved to Orange County in the mid-1990s, and at that time, she attended a stunning recital featuring the famous violinist Itzhak Perlman. That unforgettable experience left a mark on her and ultimately sparked her passion for music. It’s interesting to note how a moment like that can steer someone toward a career dedicated to inspiring others through the arts.

Rubenstein had a motivating encounter with an affluent couple who unexpectedly judged her based on her attire. That moment became a turning point for her, inspiring her not only to pursue her musical career but to also cultivate young artists who will one day inspire others as she has.

A Show to Remember

On May 10, the OCC Chamber Singers will be performing Mozart’s Requiem, accompanied by a full orchestra, which is a composition renowned for its depth and beauty. Also on the program, the audience will have the pleasure of experiencing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major, brilliantly played by OCC music instructor Teresa de Jong-Pombo. It’s a repertoire that truly highlights the artistry and passion typical of the musicians in this remarkable program.

But that’s not all! This concert is an essential stepping stone toward an even bigger endeavor—the Chamber Singers’ much-anticipated performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 24, where they will once again grace the stage with Mozart’s Requiem, but this time alongside the New York City Chamber Orchestra!

The Journey to Carnegie Hall

Vincente Dang, one of the talented bassists in the group, has a special connection with Carnegie Hall. He is making his third appearance there with OCC, which showcases not only his commitment to the art but also the tradition that Orange Coast College has built over the years. The Chamber Singers travel to Carnegie Hall every other year, and previous performances have included impressive works by composer Joseph Haydn.

Among the eager performers is Taylor Cox, a blind pianist, who is thrilled about the chance to perform at Carnegie Hall for the first time. Using Braille music transcribed by her dedicated piano teacher, Beth Syverson, she emphasizes the importance of music as a medium that provides her equal footing with her peers—all of which contributes to an enriching music community.

Though not every member of the Chamber Singers will make the trip to New York, Rubenstein is actively working to fundraise to help those who can travel. There’s a real sense of teamwork and dedication that unites this group of talented individuals.

Excitement Abounds

Mio Romero, an alto in the chamber group, expressed her excitement for both the upcoming concert and their journey to the East Coast. The singers have been hard at work, rehearsing Mozart’s Requiem since February, and now it’s time to showcase their hard work and passion for music.

If you’re interested in attending, tickets for this magical evening are affordably priced at $10 for students and $15 for the general public. They can be purchased at OCC Tickets. To make your experience even better, the college is providing free parking in Lot C.

Rubenstein emphasizes the incredible value of this concert, describing it as an “incredible arts bargain” for the quality of music offered. So, if you’re ready to experience major compositions and remarkable talent all in one place, don’t miss this special event!
