Students participating in a human trafficking awareness program

News Summary

In Irvine, Vanguard University has launched a human trafficking awareness program called ‘Safe Communities, Safe Kids’ to educate students in Orange County schools. Backed by an $825,000 grant, the initiative aims to raise awareness and provide vital education on the dangers of human trafficking, particularly affecting minors. Through peer educators, students engage in learning about identifying risks and knowing how to seek help, ultimately empowering them to take action against this pressing issue.

Exciting New Program Tackles Human Trafficking in Orange County Schools!

In the sunny city of Irvine, often regarded as one of the safest places to live, a new initiative is brewing that aims to shed light on a dark issue: human trafficking. Despite its reputation for safety, human trafficking is a real concern, and Vanguard University is stepping up to educate the youth about it. This comes after a startling statistic that two out of five victims of sex trafficking in Orange County are minors. Yes, you heard it right, minors!

Turning Pain into Power

The origins of this pressing issue can be traced back to 2002, when the very first identified human trafficking victim in Orange County—a young Egyptian girl—was discovered after being smuggled and held for two long years against her will. What a heartbreaking story that serves as a wake-up call! This courageous survivor, Shyima Hall, has become a beacon of hope and awareness, sharing her story and advocating against human trafficking.

Vanguard University, with its dedicated students and innovative approach, has created the Live2Free human trafficking awareness club, aiming to educate local high school students on the realities of this disturbing issue that could happen anywhere, even in a place like Orange County.

Launching the ‘Safe Communities, Safe Kids’ Program

Last fall, the Vanguard team kicked off their “Safe Communities, Safe Kids” program, backed by a whopping $825,000 grant from the Samueli Foundation. This program is designed specifically to raise awareness and provide prevention education on human trafficking in public schools. The Huntington Beach Union High School District has jumped on board as a strong supporter of this initiative, proving that when it comes to protecting our youth, there is no room for complacency.

Through this program, peer educators from Vanguard University were trained rigorously over 40 hours to prepare them for delivering comprehensive curriculum to local students. Presented in a health class at Westminster High School, these peer educators aim to break down complex concepts, shedding light on topics like labor and sex trafficking, as well as alarming trends such as sextortion and grooming.

Empowering Students Through Education

In an engaging presentation on March 28, 2025, students participated in a scenario where they identified red flags in a conversation between a male coach and a female student-athlete. This practical approach is pivotal because it helps students recognize concerning behaviors they may face in real life.

The presentation went further to discuss the significance of relationships and the essential role of trusted adults in their lives. To make learning even more fun, students were treated to Jolly Rancher candies as incentives to encourage participation. Who doesn’t love a sweet treat while learning about serious issues?

Junior peer educator Coco McLeroy expressed how being relatable as college students allows them to connect more effectively with high schoolers. This shared experience bridges the gap and facilitates open lines of communication, making it easier for students to absorb the vital information.

Supporting Our Youth with Resources

As if that wasn’t enough, students are also handed resource guides filled with crucial information. Plus, a unique feedback mechanism via sticky notes allows students to share any concerns or questions anonymously, paving the way for follow-up discussions with educators. This is an empowering step, enabling students to engage without fear.

With the grim reality that female minors account for 32% of all identified victims in Orange County, the feedback from students has shown promising results. One Westminster High student mentioned her newfound intention to be more cautious in her social interactions, showcasing how impactful this initiative can be.

In summary, Vanguard University’s programs are championing the fight against human trafficking in Orange County schools. They are building awareness and providing the tools students need to protect themselves. So, hats off to these passionate students and faculty for doing their part to ensure a safer future for everyone!
