Residents are encouraged to continue using local disposal centers to contribute to a cleaner and safer environment.

Huntington Beach Steps Up for a Greener Tomorrow!

On a sunny Saturday, September 14, the lovely city of Huntington Beach turned into a hub for eco-conscious residents as they flocked to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event, hosted by OC Waste & Recycling, or OCWR as it’s affectionately known. With over 500 vehicles rolling through the collection site at the Huntington Beach Corporate Yard, this event turned out to be an astonishing success!

Record-Breaking Turnout!

It’s hard to believe, but the turnout for this initiative was no regular affair. The number of vehicles was a whopping 94% increase from the average turnouts of just 172 vehicles that usually show up for events on Saturdays. It’s clear that residents were eager to make a difference and take the plunge into proper disposal methods.

Out with the Old: What Was Collected

Throughout the day, the community pitched in and generously turned over a staggering 32,000 pounds of hazardous materials! That’s a whole lot of waste that won’t end up harming our environment! Among the haul, there were around 14,000 pounds of hazardous waste, which is a broad category including materials like household chemicals and automotive products. Additionally, over 11,000 pounds of electronic waste – think old TVs, tablets, and cell phones that had seen better days – found their way to safer disposal. Don’t forget about the 7,200 pounds of latex paint, a tricky substance that needs special care when tossed out.

Community Commitment to the Environment

The impressive turnout underscores a larger message about the community’s role in environmental stewardship and public health. It’s not just about cleaning out garages and basements; it’s about creating a safer environment for everyone. By safely disposing of hazardous and electronic waste, residents are ensuring these materials do not end up in our landfills where they can cause significant environmental harm.

A Helping Hand for Residents

For those who couldn’t make it to Huntington Beach but still want to pitch in, OCWR operates three additional Household Hazardous Waste Collection Centers in Anaheim, Irvine, and San Juan Capistrano. So there is no need to miss out on the chance to do your part!

In fact, residents are encouraged to use these Centers for their ongoing disposal needs. It’s an easy and accessible way for everyone to manage their waste responsibly without any stress. Whether it’s the leftover paint from your last DIY project or the toxic batteries from your toys, these centers are equipped to handle it all!
